Those who now protest in Iran are willing to face immense suffering and persecution to bring about the change in their homeland they are seeking.  Even some of the clerics have joined the protesters, standing in stark opposition to the leader of the theocratic state.

A half century earlier, many of us in the United States faced a similar threat and were willing to take great risk and sacrifice our tranquility, our security and even face violent opponents in our quest for peace in the world, the elimination of racism, sexism, and to put an end to the growing totalitarianism we were experiencing at the helm of our great government.

We were spied on, infiltrated by government agents, trampled in the streets and shot dead in cold blood.  We were many voices and we spoke in many varied tones, but we were united in our desire to change our world and our country’s future.

God bless the people of Iran and protect them in their struggle for freedom and a more peaceful coexistence with their brothers and sisters in the world.

We have good reason to believe that the marchers in Tehran are there because of the coverup of a rigged election.

May they turn this tide and may freedom ring in the squares of Tehran as it has come to ring in the hills of Mississippi.  And may our Muslim brothers and sisters rest again in their homes, towns and villages not having to fear the agents of death.

Ella’s Song

We who believe in freedom cannot rest.

We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.

The reins are in the hands of the young who dare to run against the storm.

No needing to clutch for power, not needing the light just to shine on me, I need to be one in the number who fight against tyranny.

I’m a woman who speaks in a voice and I must be heard.

At times I can be quite difficult, I’ll bow to no man’s word.

PS:  Here is a Huffington Post writer’s live blog re: the Iranian uprising

PS:  There is a strong similarity also between the neocons of this era and the cloak and dagger dog brandishing right wingers of the Nixon era.   Read and watch Rachel Maddow to learn more about this.

The more we are able to hear Nixon’s tapes the more we are able to learn about the double-crossing, mind-boggling tyranny that sprang from this leader’s heart.

Eventually, having been caught in an illegal cover-up of his own making, Nixon had to resign in disgrace.
