Data from a Pew Research Center survey conducted April 14-21, 2009.  among 742 American adults. 

Research Question:  Do you think the use of torture against suspected  in order to gain important information can often be justified, sometimes be justified, rarely be justified or never be justified?


Fifty-four percent of those that attend weekly services say that torture can often or sometimes be justified, twelve percent higher than those who seldom or never attend such services who say the same.

An approximately twenty per cent increase in justification for torture exists among those who identify themselves as Protestant Evangelical Christian adherents.
